Hello,

Our holiday party which will include a movie and a pizza lunch will be this Friday. If you haven't sent in $5 for the pizza and drinks, please do so tomorrow if possible. Thank you!

Thanks too for your donations to Jacob's Heart. We all wrapped the presents and made cards for the family in class. I brought the gifts to their office yesterday afternoon, and they will be delivered to the family this weekend.

Have a wonderful winter break. Enjoy time with family and friends, get some rest, and have lots of fun!

Best wishes to you all.

Mrs. Koue

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was nice to have a bit of a break before these final three school weeks of 2011!

We've talked in class, and perhaps you have already heard, about adopting a family through Jacob's Heart this holiday season. Jacob's Heart is a local organization that supports families with children who have cancer. I have done this with my class for the past several years, and the folks there have always been extremely grateful. We agreed on a $5 donation per student. Of course, there is no obligation.
Thanks.

I will be encouraging them to read poems by different poets, especially ones they are not already familiar with. I would really love for everyone to discover a new poet and new poetry that he or she finds interesting and engaging.

Once again, I want to thank you all for the wonderful support you give your children. Enjoy them - and all family and friends - over the coming Thanksgiving holiday!

Hello,

Excitement is definitely in the air as we begin our final week of 5th grade. It's been a wonderful year for me, and I feel so lucky to have had this terrific group of students.

We have a full week planned. We've already had a group of students from Aptos High teach us environmental studies lessons today - very fun! Tomorrow we will be presenting our play, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Play times are at 8:20 (We need to begin before 8:30 to accommodate the primary classes who are coming) and after recess at 10:40. Hope to see some parents there! Thursday is, of course, the Boardwalk trip. Parents, please meet in our classroom at 10:25.

Thanks and enjoy the week.

Hello,

Family Life Education is coming soon! A parent information night is scheduled for next Tuesday, March 1, at 6:30 at Valencia School. I'm sorry for the last minute notice, but we just received the information this week. I will be sending home permission slips for your child to participate in this program tomorrow. The slips have detailed information regarding the program.
As we wind down to the end of the second trimester, our homework focuses on two projects: the colonial newspaper and the survival story. I've told my students they need to bring both to school each day in order to work on them.
A final note: I really appreciate how routinely the yellow half sheets come back to me signed each week. It's so important that you all are continually aware of your children's progress. Thank you for reviewing your child's work and signing the sheet!
Have a good rest of the week.

I will be assigning a non-fiction book report in about three weeks. We've talked about this in class and have looked for books in the school library. My hope is that everyone will have chosen a book by the end of this week. Thanks.
We will be taking some field trips this half of the year. Our first will be a trip to the UCSC Life Lab on Friday, Feb. 18. I will send out permission slips next week. I will also be scheduling trips to the National Weather Service in Monterey and to the Pajaronian. I've yet to set dates for these but will do so soon. Our Elementary Law trip will take place in April. I'm still waiting for the lawyer I'm working with to arrange a date.
Have a great week.
