I've heard that many of you are spending a great deal of time on the math homework.  I know that it is very frustrating not having a textbook or any written explanation in the packets your children are bringing home.  I really don't want this to take over your evenings and ask that you spend no more than 20-30 minutes on math.  If there are problems your child doesn't understand, leave them and I will review the concept the next day (and probably for the next few lessons as well).  I will be working weekly with the fifth grade team to figure out the best ways to make this program understandable and accessible to all my students!

Homework

Read: 30 min.

Language:  Finish "Nature's Fury" news story note sheet.  We will organize and develop our ideas tomorrow.

Vocabulary:  Due on Friday.

Thank you for turning the yellow emergency cards so promptly.  I still have a few more to collect and would appreciate receiving them this week.

Everyone is settling in now as we begin our second week.  We are reading stories from our literature unit, "Nature's Fury," learning about the early explorers in Social Studies, and tackling the new math program we have adopted this year.  I know this math is challenging and can be confusing.  I will be teaching all or part of a lesson on Monday through Thursday (depending on how difficult or long the lesson is).  I've told everyone to refer back to the work we did in class to help with the homework page.

I've asked my students to read a book of fiction (at least 5th grade level) for their first book report.  I will assign the report in about 3 weeks.

Homework

Homework

Read: 30 minutes.  Remember that although I don't have you keep track of your reading on a reading log, I will see your effort by the AR tests that you take.
Math:  Lesson 2 Homework, #1,2, and 3.  We will do 4 and 5 in class together tomorrow.
Language:  Finish the Four Kinds of Sentences packet if necessary.

Tuesday, August 19, 2014

I sent home the beginning of the year packet of school information today which includes your child's yellow emergency card.  Please fill this out and send it back to school this week.  I also sent home Scholastic book order forms.  Your child may bring your order to class or you may order online.  My access code is GNZFR.  I'll be sending in our first class order in about 2 weeks.

We are using a new Common Core math program this year and the format is a bit different than our previous program.  I've asked my students to keep both their lesson packet and their homework packet in their binders and to not tear any pages off until I ask for them.  It's a little tricky as the last page of one lesson is often connected to the first page of the next lesson.  I know this program may be a bit confusing at first, but I will be going over the previous night's homework with everyone in class to further explain concepts.  We're all learning!

Thank you.

Homework

Read:  30 minutes
Math:  Homework - Lesson 1, #1-5
Complete and bring in yellow emergency card by Friday.

I plan to update my blog each day with information regarding homework, projects and important school news, so please check it regularly. Your child will also be recording homework assignments in his/her planner. Unless otherwise noted, homework is due the following day.

Please give me a call, send an email, or just drop by if you have any questions or concerns.  I look forward to meeting you all!

Hello and welcome back!

I hope you all enjoyed a happy and fun-filled summer. I'm looking forward to beginning a new school year and to meeting all my new students.

Here is a list of the supplies I would like my 5th grade students to have:

*one small three-ring binder
*binder paper
*two spiral notebooks - single subject/wide ruled
*two twin pocket folders (paper ones are fine)
*several #2 pencils
*set of colored pencils
*personal pencil sharpener
*two of each - blue and red ball point pens
*small scissors
*American Heritage or other college level paperback dictionary
*a chapter book for silent reading time

Once school begins, I will post a blog each day, keeping everyone updated on homework assignments and important events.

Thanks and see you all on Monday!
