Thank you too for the terrific support you have given your children this first half of the year.  It's been a pleasure getting to know you all.

Have a wonderful winter break. Enjoy time with family and friends, get some rest, and have lots of fun!

Best wishes to you all.

“Poetry Cafe”

Let’s go back in time when things were groovy and beatniks were cool...  For this beret-wearing, finger-snapping activity you will need to do the following.  Dig it?

*Choose a poet and read several of her or his poems.

* Prepare an oral presentation.
         1.  Memorize one poem of at least 10 lines or two if shorter               to present to the class.
         2.  Briefly tell why you chose this poem(s) and discuss what you                 like about it.  You can talk about the poem’s meaning, its rhythm and rhyme, its imagery, and its poetic language.  Discuss at least 2 of these elements using examples from the poem for support.

* Complete a worksheet that will address different aspects of your   poem(s).  Neatness and accuracy count!

*The due date for this event is Friday, December 7.

So wear black and be there or be square.  Cool, Daddy-o...

It was so nice to meet all of you at Back to School Night last week. I know there just wasn't enough time to personally speak with each of you, but I invite you to stop by the classroom after school any day for a chat if you like. I really appreciate your support and am looking forward to a great year with your children.

As I mentioned during our meeting, I've run into a scheduling problem with our NASA Ames Field trip.  I scheduled the trip last August with the assumption that Parent/Teacher Conferences would occur in October as they always have.  I just found out last week that they will be held in November, the same week as our trip.  I checked with NASA and there are no more available dates this school year.  Therefore, I need to keep our Friday, November 21 appointment.  That Friday will be a short day (conference schedule) and there will be no buses for students when we return from the trip at 2:00.  I hope this won't a problem for anyone.  I will help in any way I can to set up rides for students.  I will send out information regarding the trip in a few weeks.

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

I've heard that many of you are spending a great deal of time on the math homework.  I know that it is very frustrating not having a textbook or any written explanation in the packets your children are bringing home.  I really don't want this to take over your evenings and ask that you spend no more than 20-30 minutes on math.  If there are problems your child doesn't understand, leave them and I will review the concept the next day (and probably for the next few lessons as well).  I will be working weekly with the fifth grade team to figure out the best ways to make this program understandable and accessible to all my students!

Thank you for turning the yellow emergency cards so promptly.  I still have a few more to collect and would appreciate receiving them this week.

Everyone is settling in now as we begin our second week.  We are reading stories from our literature unit, "Nature's Fury," learning about the early explorers in Social Studies, and tackling the new math program we have adopted this year.  I know this math is challenging and can be confusing.  I will be teaching all or part of a lesson on Monday through Thursday (depending on how difficult or long the lesson is).  I've told everyone to refer back to the work we did in class to help with the homework page.

I've asked my students to read a book of fiction (at least 5th grade level) for their first book report.  I will assign the report in about 3 weeks.

I sent home the beginning of the year packet of school information today which includes your child's yellow emergency card.  Please fill this out and send it back to school this week.  I also sent home Scholastic book order forms.  Your child may bring your order to class or you may order online.  My access code is GNZFR.  I'll be sending in our first class order in about 2 weeks.

We are using a new Common Core math program this year and the format is a bit different than our previous program.  I've asked my students to keep both their lesson packet and their homework packet in their binders and to not tear any pages off until I ask for them.  It's a little tricky as the last page of one lesson is often connected to the first page of the next lesson.  I know this program may be a bit confusing at first, but I will be going over the previous night's homework with everyone in class to further explain concepts.  We're all learning!

Thank you.

Our trip to the Boardwalk was a blast...from the reports I got, it sounded like all had a great time.  Thanks again to all parents who drove and kept track of our kids while we were there!

As we look to the final day of the school year, I want to wish you all a fun-filled and happy summer with your family and friends.  It's been a pleasure working with you all!

All the best,
Mrs. Koue

Our trip to the Boardwalk is this Wednesday.  Please remember that we will leave school at about 10:15 and will return at 3:30.  Your child can bring a lunch or buy food there (or both).  I've asked everyone to bring in a grocery bag tomorrow - they have lots to bring home!

Homework:  None!  Just bring a bag.

Thursday, May 29, 2014

Due to conflicts with other grades' end-of-the-year parties, a few parents who originally volunteered to drive to the boardwalk next week will now not be able to do so.  At this point, I have just enough drivers which makes me a bit nervous not to have a little cushion for any last minute changes.  So...if anyone would still like to come along as a driver/chaperone next week,  I would very much appreciate it!  Please let your child know or email me if this would work for you.

Thanks!!!

Just a reminder:  We will leave school at 11 tomorrow morning for the Watsonville Courthouse.   We will have a short welcome session and our play will start at about noon.  Parents are welcome to join us directly at the courthouse if this works out best for your schedule.

As for our NASA trip, I would love to hear from parents who would consider one of the options I posted yesterday.  If I still have 12 drivers by Friday morning, I will have to have a lottery to determine the 9 parents who can come into the NASA facility.  I hate to do this, but I need to send my parent list to NASA by this weekend.  Every chaperone must present a valid ID at the entrance office.
Thanks for your help.

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

I got quite a response to my request for drivers for our NASA trip. Thanks to all who volunteered! Unfortunately, only 9 parents can go into the Exploration Encounter facility - and I have 12 parents so far who would like to drive. I wish I could change this, but NASA is firm with this rule. Anyway, I'd like to offer a few options for you all to consider:
1. If you wouldn't mind not coming on this trip (we still have the boardwalk trip in June), please let me know.
2. If you would like to come but wouldn't mind dropping your group off and having a few hours to yourself, please let me know. We will probably be able to double up drivers, so this might work for parents who decide to come together.
3. If you have already been on this trip with an older child, the first two options might work for you as well.
I want you all to know that you are most welcome to come. I would love to have everyone there and am sorry I have to handle it this way.
Please let me know your thoughts by either sending a note in with your child or emailing me.

Thank you!

I sent home the guidelines for the heritage report today. For this report the students trace their family histories through written sources and interviews with family members, collecting information which they will use in their reports. We've already begun discussing the report and the kids are excited to learn about "where they come from."  We also composed general interview questions they can ask relatives they contact.   I would like them to do the research over the next few weeks and have most of their information ready for the report by Thursday, April 3. Thanks.
*I've included a copy of the guidelines below.

Homework

Read:  30 min.
Math: Benchmark Review worksheet.
Vocabulary test: Thursday.
Map test: Friday.

Heritage Report

Purpose of the report:

1.  You will learn more about your ancestors, gaining a greater understanding of where they originally came from and when and why they immigrated to the United States.
2.  You will learn about their experiences in this country, and as you become familiar with your family’s history, you will also learn about American history.

Task:

You will interview as many members of your family as you can.  Include grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles, cousins and other people who know your family history.

Learn:

1.  Where your ancestors originally came from

2.  What their lives were like when they lived there

2.  When they came to America

3.  Why they moved to America

4.  Why they moved across the U.S. (if they did) and what places they traveled to

5.  How they moved - modes of transportation

Find Out:

1.  What kinds of jobs they had
-Were any of your family members famous politicians, scientists, athletes,
inventors, explorers, educators,  outlaws, or movie stars?

2.  What interesting things your ancestors did

3.  How your family came to be

Gather Information

Write letters, send e-mails, make phone calls to your relatives who live far away.  Have a list of interview questions ready to go (we will compose these together in class).  Interview relatives who live nearby.  If any of your family members have written a timeline or a book, you may use it.

Please have your information ready by Thursday, April 3.  I will give you guidelines for the written report then.
