Over the past two weeks, the kids have been working on taking notes and writing rough draft paragraphs for their current writing project, a national park "travel guide."  Beginning today, I will be assigning the final draft paragraphs, one piece at a time.  The final drafts may be typed or neatly handwritten.  I will guide them through the title page, table of contents and bibliography in class. They have also been working on the park map which they drawing.  The chart or graph can be printed off an online source.  I will go over this in class as well.

I have included below information and guidelines for the project.

Social Studies: Study for Friday's test.  Use your study guide!

National Park Travel Guide - Guidelines

For this writing activity you will learn about a national park of your choice.  Using a variety of research sources, you will take notes, organize your information, write a rough draft and after careful editing, write a final draft of your "book."

You will need to find information in each of the following areas:

*Park history (when it was established, who was responsible, original inhabitants)

*General statistics (location, size, lengths of rivers, heights of mountains, etc.)

*Climate (temperatures, precipitation, etc.)

*Wildlife

*Plant life

*Places of interest

*Popular activities (things that visitors can do there)

*Other interesting facts (things that are unique to this park)

*Conservation efforts

You will also include the following:

*An illustrated cover

*A table of contents

*A title page containing the name of the park, your name, your grade, and date

*A map showing where your park is located (I will help you with this)

*A chart, graph, or diagram containing information about a particular aspect of the park

*A glossary of at least 5 words and their meanings

*A bibliography (you should have at least 4 sources)

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

I'm sorry for the late post.  I had an afternoon meeting that went long and then had to leave to do an important errand.  Unfortunately,  I didn't jot down the math pages I asked the kids to do.  If your child isn't sure of the page numbers, please go to the review section at the end of the Home Connections book and do a few of those problems.  We'll go over everything tomorrow.

Many, many thanks to all my parents who made our Friendship Breakfast this morning possible.  It was awesome and a good time was had by all!

I sent home the yearbook order forms today.  The deadline for placing an order is March 31. I also sent home some corrected work today.

After changing the date for our trip to The Tech last week, I ran into another conflict.  Our school talent show is on March 31, and I have several students trying out for it. The date for the show wasn't on the school calendar until last week and I missed it! Anyway, I tried to change the date once again but was unable to find an available slot for the lab and the movie.  I'm sorry!  We do have two more field trips planned before the end of the year - one to the Watsonville Courthouse at the end of April and one to UCSC in mid May, so I hope these will fill in the gap.  I know you all paid for The Tech trip, and I would like to handle this in one of two ways.  The UCSC organic farm trip also costs $5 per student and I could save your money for that trip - or I can refund it to you this week.  I told the kids to let me know what you would prefer.  Thanks for your understanding!

Thursday, February 2, 2017

Because of today's weather and tomorrow's rainy forecast, I have rescheduled the Tech field trip.  The new date is Friday, March 31.  I will send out a reminder as this date approaches.  Sorry about the change, but I've felt uneasy this week about driving over 17 and felt that it was best to postpone the trip. Thanks for understanding.

A reminder that our Tech field trip is this Friday.  We will leave school promptly at 8.  We always allow enough time to return to school by 2, but depending on traffic, there is a slight chance that we will be returning a little later than 2.  I will keep the office updated on our timing.
Your child will need to bring a bag lunch that day - it takes too much time to buy food there! Thanks!
