Hello,
I've decided to begin a poetry activity this month that will last throughout the year. I will be asking the kids to memorize a poem once (or sometimes twice) a month which they will present to the class. I will always give them at least a week's prep time and will also give them time in class to practice. I will be giving them their first packet of poems on Wednesday. They can choose a poem from this packet, or they can use other sources as well. I will be encouraging them to choose poems that are new to them, not ones they've memorized in the past. They will recite their poems on Wednesday of next week.

Thanks.

Hello,
We will begin writing the rough drafts of the book report tomorrow in class. Please remind your child to bring in his/her book. I told them not to worry if they haven't quite finished their books. The writing we do tomorrow will not require knowledge of the book's ending. I really just want to show them what I expect and give them a format to follow.
We've set AR goals for the first trimester. I will be sending home goal sheets tomorrow. Please review it with your child, sign it, and send it back to school. Thanks.
Have a good week!

Hello,
I introduced the News Teams procedures with my students today. Each child is bringing home the guidelines for the activity today and all will present a news story this Friday. This will be a practice session where I will guide them and give them tips for future presentations. I also told them how I calculate the Listening and Speaking grade on their report cards. 75% of their grade is based on oral presentations (including News Teams) and 25% on class participation. We discussed how important it is to be actively listening and contributing during class lessons and discussions.
The Innisbrook Wraps orders are due by the end of this week.
Thanks!

Hello,
The kids will be taking their first Social Studies test this Thursday. They completed a study guide in class today and should be reviewing it each night.
We will also be starting a new activity this week - News Teams. We will be receiving the Santa Cruz Sentinel every Monday and Wednesday this year and will be using it to study current events and to report on them. This week will be a group effort where I will explain the program and have everyone take a trial run on Friday. I will explain the process tomorrow and have each student pick a news story to study and prepare to present. I will be sending home the news team form tomorrow along with an explanation of how this activity affects the listening and speaking grade on their report cards. Please take a look at this. Thanks.
One more important announcement - Spanish is now in 5th grade! Ms. Murray is back and
she will be teaching our fifth graders for the entire school year. We had our first class with her this morning - it was terrific!

Have a good week.
