Monday, December 15, 2008

Hello,
Excitement is in the air as we approach the winter break! I know things can get pretty hectic, juggling all the events that happen this time of year with the usual school schedule. Thanks for helping your children stay focused on their school work during these final weeks.

Homework will be on the light side this week, the main assignments being studying for the Crispen vocabulary test on Wednesday and memorizing the poem for Thursday.
I did not send home folders today - they will go home tomorrow. Please remember to check and sign your child's yellow progress sheet.

Wednesday is our trip to AJHS to see Sleeping Beauty. We will be leaving school at 8:30. Thanks to all my parent drivers!

Looking ahead to 2009... I have asked the kids to read as much as they can over the winter break. I will be assigning a book report (fiction - chapter book) when we come back in January. I reminded them that their reading will prepare them to take AR tests as well. Also , I will be sending home the guidelines for a weather science project tomorrow. Our next science unit is on weather, and as our unit project each student will choose one type of weather station and build it. This project won't be due until Jan. 30, but if your child has a free afternoon during the break, she/he might want to get an early start.

Have a wonderful winter break. Enjoy time with family and friends and get lots of rest - if possible!

Best regards,

Mary Ann Koue

Hello,
We continued to work on the colony brochure today - they look great!
We also compiled a list of 20 vocabulary words (taken from this week and last week's spelling lists) and wrote down their meanings. These will be the words used in next Wednesday's vocabulary test.
Tomorrow I will give everyone a packet of poems for next Thursday's poem recitations. Everyone must chose one long one (at least 10 lines) or two short ones to memorize. Choosing a poem that is not in the packet is fine, but I would like to see it ahead of time.
Thanks!

Here's the homework for the rest of the week:
Wednesday

Math: Group 1 - #85; Group 2 - #106

Hello,
We began working on the colony brochures in earnest today and made great progress. I will be assigning different sections to be completed for homework throughout the week. Tonight the kids need to finish their covers and the first panel of their brochures. I gave them a checklist stating what I expect. Please review this with them.
Please send in the field trip forms along with $1.00 for your child. Also, please let me know if you can drive. The Jr. High play is always fun, and it's great to see former Rio students perform!

Thanks and have a good afternoon.

Mrs. Koue

Hello,
We were talking in class today about holiday activities and decided that instead of a $5.00 gift exchange with classmates that we would prefer to donate our money to a local charity. We decided on Jacob's Heart. This organization would use our class donation to help support a family struggling with the expenses of cancer care for their child this holiday season. We thought $5.00 per student would be reasonable - but there's no obligation. Please do what works best for you. Thanks.
I've sent home your child's AR goal sheet today - please sign it for the second trimester and send it back tomorrow. The 30 minutes of reading I assign each night should help your child complete books that he/she can take tests on. If the computer testing format does not work well for your child, he/she can take a short written test on the book. I will give the same number of points as the computer test awards.
We will be attending Aptos Jr. High's production of Sleeping Beauty on Wednesday, 12/17. I sent home permission slips today. Please let me know if you can drive. The cost for each student and adult is $1.00.

Thanks!

Hello,
I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend - a nice rest before we begin the second trimester of the school year.
I talked to my students today about late work and how I will handle this issue from this point on. I feel that these past first months of school have been a training period where I have introduced my procedures and expectations and have allowed time and support for everyone to understand and to follow them. During this second grading period I will expect that class assignments and homework be turned in on time. If an assignment is turned in late, I will mark it down a full grade (if a student continues to not complete work on time, I will stop accepting it). By the third and final trimester, I will not accept late work at all without a note from a parent.
Fortunately, the majority of my students consistently turn in work on time. I really appreciate their good study habits and the excellent support that you provide for them.

Thank you,

Mrs. Koue

P.S. If your child completed all her/his work, I did not send home a yellow progress sheet today.

Hello,
It was so nice to meet with all of you last week. I really appreciated your insights, suggestions, and, above all, the wonderful support you give your children.
Your child is bringing home the study guide for Thursday's social studies test today.
I also sent home the guidelines for the second book report. I will work with them on the written portion of the report next week in class. I've changed the due date to Thursday, 11/6.
We are continuing to work on the museum project in class. Tomorrow each group will assess where they are and how much more they need to do. I will then help them set goals for finishing up unfinished work at home and will include deadlines on the nightly homework list.
Tomorrow I will be sending home the permission slips for our NASA Ames field trip on 11/7. Please let me know if you can drive - NASA will only allow 10 parent chaperones, so please respond right away if you would like to come along.

Looking ahead to next week... I will be giving a science test on Wednesday, 10/29. A study guide will go home this Thursday!

Hello,
I've decided to begin a poetry activity this month that will last throughout the year. I will be asking the kids to memorize a poem once (or sometimes twice) a month which they will present to the class. I will always give them at least a week's prep time and will also give them time in class to practice. I will be giving them their first packet of poems on Wednesday. They can choose a poem from this packet, or they can use other sources as well. I will be encouraging them to choose poems that are new to them, not ones they've memorized in the past. They will recite their poems on Wednesday of next week.

Thanks.

I will explain the process tomorrow and have each student pick a news story to study and prepare to present. I will be sending home the news team form tomorrow along with an explanation of how this activity affects the listening and speaking grade on their report cards. Please take a look at this. Thanks.

Hello,
Things are going well! I'm very pleased to see that my students are turning their homework in on time and that they are doing good work in class. I've sent home the weekly corrected work folder today. Please sign the half sheet and have your child bring this back along with the empty folder tomorrow. Thanks for your support.
Everyone should be reading a book (fiction) for our first book report which will be due on September 24. I will hand out the guidelines in about two weeks and will begin the report with them in class. We talked in class about the importance of reading each night, and we all agreed that at least 30 minutes is a reasonable amount of time.
After much thought over the past week, I've decided to change the way I use my blog. I would like to begin giving daily updates on homework rather than plan out the entire week ahead of time. Sometimes things change in class - we stick with something longer than expected, or we move along faster - and this would give me a little more flexibility. I will still write a note and give a general overview each Monday.
Please remember to attend Back to School Night. I'm looking forward to meeting you, filling you in on 5th grade, and answering your questions!

Regards,
Mrs. Koue

Hello,
Well, we've gotten off to a good start. I have a wonderful group of students - all very respectful and motivated!
Each Monday I will post my blog for the week. This site will inform you of weekly and long-term homework assignments, activities, and events. Your child will also be recording homework assignments in her/his planner. Unless otherwise noted, assignments are due on the following day.
Also, each Monday (beginning next week) I will be sending home graded work from the previous week in your child's folder. The half yellow sheet that I will include in each folder will let you know if your child has turned in all required assignments or if anything is missing. Please sign this and send it back to me. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Your involvement now will help to ensure your child's success in the coming year.
Tomorrow I will be sending home the student emergency form. Please fill this out and send it back to school as soon as possible.
I'm very happy to be working with your children this year and am looking forward to meeting you all at Back to School Night on August 27!

Have a good week!

Welcome!

Hello and welcome back!

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful and restful summer. I'm happy to be back in fifth grade and am very busy getting ready for the new school year!

Here is a list of supplies my students will need:

One small 3-ring binder
Binder paper
Zippered pencil pouch for binder
Set of binder dividers with plastic tabs
Two spiral notebooks - single subject/wide ruled
Several #2 pencils
Set of colored pencils
Two of each - blue and red ball point pens
Personal pencil sharpener
Small scissors
American Heritage or other college level dictionary
Dry erase markers (fine point) and sock

I will be posting a blog each week and will write a more informative note next Monday. I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday.

Enjoy your last day of summer!!
