My students brought home the work they have completed in class for their book reports. They should have a very good start on the summary and the character paragraphs. The final drafts may be handwritten or typed. I sent home a final draft guideline half sheet (green) to answer any questions about the format of the report. The kids are working on their covers in class and will have more time to do this throughout this week.
**I know I asked for the final draft of the summary to be completed by tomorrow. This is just for pacing sake. Your child doesn't have to turn it in to me. The entire report is due on Friday, 10/19.

Spotlight on Character!
In this book report you will focus on
the main character of the novel you have read.
You will discuss this character’s personality traits and the problem he
or she faces in the story. Your report
will consist of four main parts.
1.
Write a brief summary of the book in which you introduce the main character ( you may mention other
characters as well) and explain
the problem the character faces and how he or she solves this problem.
You will write the rough draft of
this section in class.
2. Write at least two
paragraphs discussing this character’s personality. You will need to show how these personality
traits are revealed
through the character’s words, feelings, actions, and interactions with other characters. You
will write the rough draft of
this section in class as well.
3. Compose at least five
interview questions that you would like to
ask your character. Then write the
response you think your character
would give for each. You will complete this section at home.
4. Create a magazine cover
spotlighting your character. It should include an appropriate magazine title, an
illustration of the character,
and any suitable article titles, descriptions, and slogans.
We will share our ideas about
this piece and begin our work on it
in class.
Spotlight on Character - Final Draft
Checklist
My final
draft writing is neatly handwritten or typed. ______
I have
written on one side only of each paper. ______

of 10
sentences). This should be written on a separate piece of
paper(s). _______
Both
character trait paragraphs begin with a topic sentence and contain
good examples
from the book (minimum of 6 sentences). Both
paragraphs
may be written on one sheet of paper
or you may write each one on
a separate sheet. ______
The five
interview questions are clear and answered well. If
your
question requires a yes or no
response, be sure to have your
character explain why he/she gave this
response. ______
My cover is
detailed and colorful and shows my best effort.
I have
included all
the parts explained in the guidelines. ______
I have used
correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. ______

Dear Parents,
Mr. Kitch, Mr. Sweet, and Mrs. Koue are considering a new end of the year trip for our students. We have found that the majority of kids go to the Boardwalk frequently and have season passes, so it is not really a special trip because kids go there all of the time. Our fifth grade team is considering going to Roaring Camp for an exciting simulation of pioneer days. Please take the time to vote on our end-of-the year field trip. We would like your feedback! Please read below and vote here:

Here is a blurb from the Roaring Camp website:
"Explore the life style of 1840's pioneers as trappers, traders and settlers demonstrate their skills in blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking and spinning. Learn candle making, gold panning, pioneer games and square dancing. Experience class in a one-room schoolhouse. Listen to Isaac Graham's story and Native American lore. This package includes a trip on a vintage locomotive and narrative of the California Redwood Forest.
Students: $29.50 (an adult rides for $17.00 with every four student tickets purchased)
Additional adults: $24.50"
Boardwalk details:
All-Day Rides Wristband**
Only $27.95 plus tax - SAVE $9
(reg. $36.95 plus tax)
Unlimited rides all day long!
